Affordable Health InsuranceDrug PlansBenefits of Supplemental Prescription Drug Plans
Despite the wide availability of public and private prescription drug plans, some Canadians have no coverage at all for prescription drugs. While the Canadian Government takes pride in the availability of health care, 24% to 30% of the population has no public or private sector drug coverage in the Atlantic Provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and Newfoundland). This is a problematic statistic. Even though Canada is known for having cheaper drug prices than its neighbouring country, many Canadians are still having trouble affording the rising prices of medication, and thus worry more about unexpectedly falling ill. Provincial Prescription Drug PlansThe federal government and every provincial and territorial government provide different drug coverage to their residents. The only coverage details that remain similar throughout most of Canada are regarding those who are eligible for full drug coverage:
After paying a required deductible of a few dollars, these specified groups receive 100% coverage from their provincial prescription drug plans. For the rest of Canadian citizens, partial drug coverage is available from every provincial government. The method and extent of coverage, however, varies from region to region. Many government plans require individuals less than 65 years of age to pay an annual deductible in order to receive 100% coverage.
